Toy companies sold cut outs of paper dolls shaped like the "traditional American family of the 1950s." What does this reveal about stereotypes and biases of the time period?

Hi KIPPsters!

Here we go, diving into another whole class novel or, rather, play! We will officially begin reading A Raisin in the Sun tomorrow (or Wednesday at the latest). Today, however, we began a really interesting discussion about the historical context of the play — the 1950s. After reading all three parts of the article, follow the Criteria for Success to repond to the reading.

CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS.

1. Username.

2. Tonight, it took me approximately _________ minutes to finish reading the article.

3. How was life in the suburbs different from life in the city? How was it seen as improvement? Use details from the article to back up your thinking.

4. In class today, we talked about the belief that African Americans were lower class citizens as compared to white Americans in the decades preceding the 1950s. In what ways did that belief begin to be challenged during the 1950s? Use proof from the article.

5. What were some of the expectations for women during the 1950s? As a result, what were some activities that typical American women participated in during the 1950s?

Use as much proof as possible. Good luck, happy reading and happy blogging!

  1. Hello, it’s Rahrah2015 and today I read for about 10 to 15 minutes.

Life in the surburbs were like you can get in and out of the city, b ut was still close in range of a job and you had a actual house, a yard, and a community sense. Life in the city was like apartment situation was lacking and people began moving out to the edges of the cities and it created a community called the surburbs.

It began to chanllenged when they made American african worked, but when the white American men came home the African Americans went back to their struggling.

Some expectations for women were that they had to stay in the kitchen and were supposed to be good wifes and a good mothers. American women had began to work and began homemakers.

  2. My user name is jasonb2015. Tonight, it took me approximately 7 minutes to finish reading the article. Life in the suburbs was different from life in the city because in the city, there were crowds of people living, due to a huge housing crisis that began because no new houses had been built in 20 years. There was absolutely nowhere to live. In the suburbs though, there were not many crowds in just one single community. There was actually plenty of space for families to live in unlike the city where there was nowhere to live in. Everything seemed peaceful and calm and life in the suburbs was enjoyable to many people. Life in the suburbs was seen as improvement because in the suburbs you were still in close range of the job opportunities, while escaping the crowds. Also, people actually had their own houses, a yard, and a sense of what living in a community felt like. There were “neighborly” barbecues and cocktail parties too in the suburbs. Obviously, there was a lot more freedom.

The belief began to be challenged in the 1950s because Rosa Parks, a black woman, according to the law in Montgomery, Alabama, was supposed to give up her seat in the bus in request of the white man wanting to sit there, but she didn’t do it. She knew that she should have a right to sit there and knew that just because she was black, it didn’t mean that whites should be treated with more respect than blacks. She was ahead of her time and knew about equality and the fact that everyone should be treated with respect and fairness.

Some of the expectations for women in the 1950s was to be good mothers and wives, being always in the kitchen cooking and doing all the housework around the house. They were also expected to not work, but just stay at home being “homemakers.” It was the men who now had the role to work and earn money. Some activities that typical American women participated in the 1950s were advertisers the portrayed women happily turning on her stove, or loading a dryer . The advertisers signified that women were happy to be housewives and that their job was to create the perfect family life.

  3. Tonight, it took me about 9-12 minutes to read the whole passage.

Life in the suburbs what different then the life in the city because in the city there was a huge housing crisis. The suburbs was better because you got out of the city, but also had close range job opportunnites. In the suburbs you got your own house, a yard, and real community sense.

In the passage it says that racism was a significent part of African-American people. Also, Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat to a white person. After that, Africans began to realize that this isn’t right, and began to protest with the other Africans.

The women’s job was basically to do all the house work. She couldn’t go to college because she always had to go stay home and clean. She also had to cook food for the men and the family. Women were expected to be good mothers and wives. The womens job was to basically take care of the family.

tonight it took me about 15 minutes to finish reading the article.
Suburban life was calmer, with an easy way to have a job in the city without having to deal with city struggles. City life was harder because of the dangers of the people codemned from the easier, suburban life.
The belief was challenged because black people risked their lives and well being to help the culture of their part of America. For example, Rosa Parks helped “stick it to the man”[my words, never theirs] by simply not getting up for a random white man. Martin Luther King, used his gift of speech to inspire black people to help themselves out of the racial traps that they would have happiy stayed in without his or anyone else’s words helping them.

  5. Hi my name is Deion and tonights reading took me about 7-9 minutes to finish my reading

Life in the suburb was differnet from the life in the city because, in the suburbs you lived in a house with your family, has a back yard, and their own front yard.It was also different because once you was moved into a suburb area you was part of theupper class. It was seen as important because once the men came back from WW2 more people has moved in when they were away and when they came bach everything was crowded and packed.

I think belief began to be challengedburing 1950 in a calm and respected way. I say this because Martin Luther King Jr said it him self, that he believed that religious beliefe and knowledg, and his preaching abilities, was a way to peacefully protest with out any violence.

In the 1950s womens exspectations were to stay home most of the time and do house work. They was also exspected to sometime take the men place at work when the men went out a fight in a war. They was finally exspected to watch the children and shop for food, clothes, etc. During the 1950s some actvities that typical American Women particaipatedin is shopping, cleaning, baby sitting, working, and being happy.

  6. Angeline2015: Tonight, it took me approximately 5 minutes to finish reading the article.Life in the suburbs was different then life in the city because, in the suburbs welcomed all type of families- from middle class to upper class. In the city, the apartment was lacking. It was seen as improvement because people that moved to the suburbs, now had a place to live that was comfortable, you were still close to job opportunities, it had a yard and real community sense.
During the 1950’s this belief started to be challenging when African Americans made a boycott and thy walked up to 12 miles just to not take the bus after Rosa Parks was arrested. Also, the law said that if a white person got on the bus and a black person was sitting, that person had to stand up and give up her seat. They had to work hard and make many changes in their life in order to follow what they had to do.
Some of the expectations for women during the 1950’s was to take over the jobs of men that were at war. They were expected to be good mother and wives .

  7. sammy2015: Tonight, it took me approximately 15 minutes to finish reading the article. Life is the suburbs is different than life at the city because there is less crowd. There seems to also be a better and more realistic sense of community. An improvement was that it created a social dynamic to itself. Rosa Parks faught for a right she believed in. She had a small problem once when she was in the bus that a white man was suppose to be offered a seat by her by law. Since she didn’t do as told, she got in trouble. People began boycotting against this belief. Some may have agreed and others opposed. Women were expected to stay home and take care of their families. Women barely were meant or allowed to do anything. Men had spevial jobs too but women had a job at home for the most part.

  8. it took me about 15 minutes to read and take notes on it.
living in the city was different from the suburb because most of house in the suburbs are owned by white people. many black people didnt live in these houses because of the lack of jobs that was open to them.
the belief of the african americans are lower class started to be challenge because when they started to protest and boycott all of things in order for them to get were we are now today.
back than the expectation for a women was to stay home and let the man go to work. while the woman were home they had to cook and clean the house. this was there basic job.

  9. It took me about 10 minutes to read the article.
Life was different because you lived there with only you’re family and you weren’t as crowded like in the cities. It was seen as improvement because people were moving out and leaving the places less crowded.By 1960 over 10 million owed homes. In the 1950s Rosa Parks didn’t give up her seat on the bus and she was arrested, but people did start seeing that actions make differences. That belief began to challenged, but then Friedan started seeing that women roles were not right and the men had the stronger roles in the society. In the 1950s women had to take men jobs because the men were out to war.Women had to step up to make money for their families and to make up for the lost work that men are missing out on.

  10. Marien2015 : Tonight it took me about 10 minutes to read America in the 1950s.

One way that life is diffrent in the suburbs then it is in the city is that there is much more space . Most of the people lived in the city which is th main reason why it was alwats crowded . Vecause of this they moved out tothe suburbs were there was much more room for families.

One way that this belief started to change during the 1950s was that more nd more people staeted to stand up for themselfs. One example of a person was Rosa Parks. Another example of one of these people are Martin Luther King Jr.

One of the expectations of women during the 1950s is that they had to rais a good family . This is because they were supposed to stay home the entire day. Another example of the expectations of women durinq the 195os is that they always did all the cooking and cleaning in the house.

  11. Julio2015: Tonight it took me 10-15 minutes to finish the article. The suburbs were different from the city because in trhe city it was mostly crowded, and suburbs were mostly for people moving from the city. Which made the suburbs very quiet. It was seen as improvment because since the people in the city were crowded, now they moved to a suburb which is quiet. These beliefs were a challenge becuase many blacks and African-American were being disrespected by whites. Many Whites back then felt that maybe blacks weren’t as important as whites, and therefore thought they could just criticize you because of the color of your skin. I think those white people were wrong because every one is eqaul. These were mostly the challenges thats blacks or colored people faced back then in the 1950’s. Some of the expectation that women were left to do was to be good mother and wives. Women didn’t need to work because there husbands got enogh money leading them to not need to work. This is basically saying that they were mostly housewifes. They didn’t do nothing either than cook and clean around the house. Some activities that women did was that they joined groups to protest that women were more than just housewifes. They were women who could work outside of there house, and not be a housewife. Betty Freidman wrote a book about how women are more than housewifes. Betty Freidman was important. Even though here book wasn’t published until 1963, she still showed that women can do many other things than just being a housewife.

  12. Ola2015- Tonight, it took me approximately 19 minutes to finish the article. The belief that African Americans were lower class than whites was challenged in the 1950’s when “90% of the African American population in Montgomery” participated in a boycott protesting segregation on public. In the 1950s women’s expectations were to be “good mothers and wives”. Some activities that women did were to write a book about unfair stereotypical roles. 🙂 🙂

  13. lourdes2015: I read the article fore about 10 minutes.
Living in a suburb was different from a city because it was less crowded and had a “real community sense” that attracted people to clive there too. After the men came back home from the war, cities were overcrowding and left some people without a home. This is why they decided to move out the city and get a real house instead.
The belief that African Americans were lower class citizens compared to white Americans began to change when people like Rosa Parks were going againts the rules that were followed all the time. Rosa Parks started to have people pay attention to this issue when she refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white person. People began to question the treatment given towards African Americans. They showed their disaproval through the boycott againts buses.
Not only were people being segragated by race, but by gender too. Women were left jobless after the men came from the war making them go back to the job they had before, being a wife/mother. t that time, people believed that women were supposed to be at home taking care of her family and their hosehold. so ususually women were left home and couldn’t get a job or move past it until the 1960’s.

  14. Angely2015: Tonight it took me about 10-15 min to finish the article.

Suburbs-had barbecues, cocktail parties, it seemed more neighborly, it had a yard and a more real community sense.

City- loud, noisy, usually seemed crowded, a lot of crimes and violence happening at the time. , this has improved because now today use a lot of bad things such as violence in the city, but in the suburbs u see a lot of peace quiet, and kids playing around.

Rosa Parks and Martin Luther king were the start to that change, because they thought that it was wrong, but were the first to speak up about it.

I think that in the 1950s women were expected to be at home taking care of children and men, but as most people didn’t know at the time was that they were capable to do much more than that. When men were sent to wwll, women took a role and took men’s jobs while they were away, and it turned out was that their entire house worked at home finally paid off.

  15. kdozier2015, it took me like 13 mins to read the article. life was different in so many ways on of the obvious reasons were that it was more quite than it was in the city. they were also more neighborly. they had more barbecues people in the city because they had backyards(hot dog productions went up from 750 million lbs in 1950 to 1050 million lbs in 1960). they also had cocktail parties they also created branches like little league the girl scouts and PTA. it was seen as a improvement because everybody were more spaced out and had their own homes. it started to challenged the racism though when on December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks sat down on the bus and restrained her self from moving because she was tired, so the called the cops because she didn’t let a white person have her seat. martin Luther king Jr. played a big part in trying to change that so they boycotted and protest to help end slavery. some expectations for women were to stay in the house cook clean and not go to school and not to have jobs if they did have jobs it was either cooking cleaning or maid. most women stayed home after they were fired as an activity.

  16. suni2015- Tonight it took me approximately 15 minutes to finish the article. Life in the suburb was different from life in the city, because in the city there was alot of people crowded in the same place. It would we seen to improvement by new house being built. Those beliefs began to be chalenge in the 1950’s , because more African Americans started thinking of how unfairly they would be treated just because their skin color was darker. Also because people started realizing that even though slavery was stopped they were still treaded like they had no rights, so people started to change their ways of lifestyle and became more sirious about how people are treading them. Some of the expetations for womwn during the 1950’s was that they had to stay at home all the time and they couldn’t get education neither a job, but stay at home doing chores and making food for the family. They mostly participated in doing all the work at home, or caring for the family.

  17. Tonight it took me about 20minutes to read the whole article.Living in the suburbs was very attractive to many people. This was an improvement because you got out of the city but was still close enough to get to your job. This racism thing was challenged because of mostly two people which is Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King Jr. Rosa was a lady who was brave because one day she was tired and did not want to give her seat up to a white person. So they arrested her and than Martin Luther King Jr. heard about this and boycotted on these people. Some expectations for the women back than is being a house wife, but while the men where in war they would take over their husbands job until they came back. When the war was over 2million women lost their jobs and had to become housewives by working in the kitchen or just cleaning the house.

  18. Janibell2015- I read this article in 10 minutes. Life in the suburbs was different from life in the city because everyone was independent. There was more space in the suburbs. Life in the city was crowded and more expensive.

The belief began to be challenged when Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King did many things to gain the respect of African Americans. They protested peacefully. They eventually convinced white and black people to intergrate.

Women in the 1950’s were expected to work inside their houses. Also, when the men were out at war, they had to take over their jobs as well. A typical American woman would have to clean their houses, make food, make clothes, and also do all the farming. They had to do double as much work since they weren’t able to go to war.

  19. leah2015 tonight it took me 11 minutes to read the article.

Life in the city was really crowed and was running out of space for people. Also the city was running out of jobs, for blacks and whites. But counterwise life in the suburbs wasn’t so busy,in fact it was close to empteyness. In the the 1950s people werte afriad to go live somewhere else, rather than the city.It was an improvement because, noone was there so their were alot of jobs and places to live. In the article it said that people there were running out of jobs and places to live, so some peoople had to leave and move somewhere else.In the article it said that women were supposed to be good mothers and house wives. When in reality so are fathers, they don’t have to be house wives or hoouse husbands, but good fathers. Also they are sterotyping all women in the 1950s, because they were much more than that, they were are leaders and followers. They all didn’t have to be something that every one else were, they were indivuials. Some of the expectations for women were to be good house wives, they ,women, mostley did house work. They mostley only had jobs as maids. Men only had to work and make sure they had a house and the income was good.

  20. tonight it took me like about 20 minutes to read the article. life in the suburbs was different because most of the people got to get a way from the city and it’s crowds of people. it was also great because everyone had there own space to relaxes in. they had backyard and many other things. i would say that it was challenging for color folks because they didn’t have many of the same right as white folks did. but they barley had right is the important thing during this time. color folks during this time weren’t as equal as white folks were. also their kids didn’t get a really good education as white young kids did. the responsibility that women had were to stay at home feed the kids keep the crib clean , and to be good mothers and wives.

  21. Hi! I’m Samaiyah2015 and it took me about 5 minutes to read the article.
In the suburbs, life was different from the city life. The city was a crowed place with mainly poor people barely surviving. And the suburbs was a place where white people could get away from the crowd. It was a movement because it inspired women to stay in the house where “they belonged.”
it was challenged when people like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King came along. They were people who inspired people to think and see blacks as regular people.
Women were expected to stay at home. If they did have a job, it was as a maid most likely.they were expected to stay home. They were expected to keep their husbands and families happy.

  22. Tonight it took me approximately 8 minutes to finish reading the article. In the city, the apartment situation was lacking, despite from the suburbs, where it was opened to all types of families. It was seen as improvement because in 1960, there were over 10 million new homeowners. The belief that African American were lower class citizens as compared to whites began to be challenged during the 1950’s. For example, Rosa Parks, who played an important part in the fight for equality, went to jail for not giving up her seat. She was tired with many bags and refused to stand up. Only white people can sit. Women were expected to be good mothers and wives. Women were homemakers, they were isolated from their husbands, and to create a perfect family, they had to be a perfect house wife.

  23. Gabriel2015: America in the 1950s

It took me about 15 minutes to read this passage.

1: Life in the suburbs was not as crowded as it was in the city. The suburbs also were able to house the lower class citizens and the higher class citizens. You were also able to be out of the city, but close enough to get the job opprutunities. You were also able to have houses compared to have apartment HOMES in the city.

2: In the 1950s African Americans began to start acting equal as the whites. Or at least they tried to. Two people did much to the civil rights movement. Rosa Parks got on a bus and sat on the white side of the bus. A man wanted to sit in her seat but she refused to move. She was eveantually arrested for not listening to the white man (How does that sound?). Martin Luther King Jr. also did much to the civil rights movement. He gave his famous speech with the quotes “I had a dream”. Martin Luther King Jr. also got 90% of the African Americans in Montgomery to the another kind of boycott. There would also be other events that will lead up to the civil rights movement, but those are some of the most important.

3: Woman in the 1950s were to supposed to work so they can keep on getting money for the family. They were expected to this because the men were gone at War World II. Since the woman were expected to get jobs, that is exactly what they did. The mothers would leave the home to work and not fill out her stereotypical duty of a woman. When the men came back from War World II, they filled out their stereotypical job as woman. That is to be a good mother and a good wife. When the 1960s hit, women were ale to get jobs again, but there was still somewhat of a stereotypical for them.

  24. ClarissaC2015 =) . Tonight, it took me approximately 10 minutes to finish reading the article.

    1) Life in the suburbs was different than living in the city because the suburbs was seen as a little more classy and nice and neat. The city was seen as lower class and it was busier than the suburbs. The suburbs were also calmer than the city.

    2) The beliefs were challenged when it came to getting jobs and finding houses. It was a little more difficult for them since they were competing against the whites, which were pointed out as superior. Jobs were going to the whites and the blacks got lower paying jobs and tighter spaced homes.

    3) In the 1950’s , women were expected to stay at home and do house work. People back then weren’t expecting women to do the types of jobs that are being offered to them now. If you were able to cook, clean and wash clothes, you were considered a good house wife. If not, then the structure of the house back then would be ruined.

  25. Hello this is Elianny2015. Tonight it took me about 20 minutes to finish the article. Life in the suburbs was different from life in the city because the city was more crowded than the surburbs. It also had a lot of houses and back yards. Well there were alot of people that wanted to make a difference like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. They started boycotts annd many fights. Wpmen in the 1950s were excepected to stay home and be a house wife. They took care of they house hold chores. They were not aloud to get a good education and were not alowed to have certain types of jobs. Life for the women were hard as well as it was for the African Americans.

  26. Justin2015. It took me about 13 minutes to read the article. Life in the subrubs because it was smaller than a city and eveyone had their own home and car. Also they can get away from crowds but stil have close range of job opportunities. The belief that began to challenge was that they didn’t withstand to obtain equality. Some expectations were that women had to stay home all the time. Rosa Parks led the Montgomery Boycott and 90% African Americans participated in it which was part of the reason for it’s success.

  27. Arsthly2015: today, it took me 15 minutes to read the artical.
Life in the suburbs were different in than life in the city because there was more space to live in the suburbs than in the city. I was seen as an improvement because it was what most people thought was a typical American family at the time. If you moved to the suburbs, you were allowed to live this life style. That belief was beging to be chanellged because more and more blacks started to stand up for themself, and counteract want the whites wanted for the blacks. For example, Rosa Parks stoud up for herself when she was made to move to the back of the bus. She stoud up for what she belived in, and tried to make a change, even if all that did was land her a spot in jail. Some things women were made to do was stay at home, cook, clean, and do all the house work. Women didn’t get an education. Some activities women particpated in were working, going home, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the childern. They worked because the men were in the war.

  28. Hello 2015, today it took me 10 minutes to finish reading the passage.

The passage is a really great passage and kind of sad passage. This passage has to do with lower class people and fiancial problems. In the cities the, the apartments situation wad lacking, and really bad that most people had the push out to the edges of the cities. The suburbs were basicially for any family and they were more for lower class people.

Africans before use to have lots of problems with money. Whites were wealthy and had what ever they wanted. Now in these day africans had an opprotunite in having to get jobs even though it was hard.

Women in those times had to stay home and basically do work all day like food wash laundry and also do the dishes. Women in those days had no freedom what so ever. They had to do lots of things for their family or even for their husband.

Peace out 2015.bout to go to sleep in awhile. Went to the doctor and they took x- Ray of my hands again. Tell you more 2m.

  29. Ag2015. Tonight, it took me approximately 10 minutes to finish reading the article. The life i the suburbs was different from the city it has silence and its not as packed. It was seen as a improvement because it doesn’t have the same amount of people taking up the same amount of space. The way those beliefs of African Americans changed was that people were seprated and they had people to fight for them because they didn’t know how to start fighting for themselves. The women were supposed to stay home and cook and clean. While the men went out to drink and work to get money to pay for their houses and family. They did a lot. The women were apart of Civil Rights inactments they had a right to speak for themselves including the men.

  30. hello Orlando G 2015.Today i read the passage in about minutes 15 with notes and every thing. In the suburbs it was different they had yards and many thing the city doesn’t have. the suburbs were more tranquil then the city.as described in the article it says the suburbs were building a social dynamic for it self. One of the challenges that those beliefs had were the ones like Rosa parks not giving up her seat to a white man.women were expected to be good mothers and wives .this was labeled by many women including Betty Freidan who wrote a book about women stereotypes.

    • my star look like me except i don’t have a bandage in my mouth it is as if it were saying be quite.

  31. kaylap2015.It took me at least five minutes to read the passage. Life in the suburbs were different from the city because the suburbs were more quiet and there were less crowds but in the city there is more noise and more crowed people walking. It has been an improvement because its says “This coincided with the idea that one who lived in the suburbs had climbed out of the city” so that means that some people would say that the suburbs are much better than cities. That belief began to be challenged in the 1950s because some things happened during the 1950s because of racism for example Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white person in the bus and was arrested because of that. Some of the expectations that the women had back then in the 1950s was actually women lost their jobs and had to go back to the kitchen while me took over the workforce again. Also, they were expected to be good mothers and wives after the war. Some activities that the women might have done in the 1950s was that they would take over a job that the men did while the men would go out to war.

  32. life in the suburbs was different for many people because people were really cramped there were also not much room to move to places ever since the war ended. But in the suburbs there are ew people and htere is alot of space and fresh air. this was an improvement because they werent that cramped and there is more room than before.

  33. Gianni2015. Tonight it took me approximately took 6 minutes to finish reading the article . Life in the suburbs was different than life in the city because because it was much quieter in the suburbs and less crowded than in the cities. It began o be challenged because the African Americans weren’t fully allowed to join the Army. Also white people didn’t really think that African Americans should have the same rights as them. Some expectations some women had was to stay home with the kids and clean cook and take care of them. Those were some typical days for most women in the 1950’s.

  34. Genesis2015.Tonight it took me 15 minutes to read the article.Life is different in in a suburb because there is less people and is not crowded but life in a city, you’ll have to be around many poeple and it will be crowded. It seemed to be an improvement becausein a suburb a home is still a house but it has a yard and real community sense. The belief has begun to be a challenge because it was stated that women would have to always stay home and be good wives and mother and men would be out all day working. This is supported on part 3 the second paragraph where it had said that they had to be good mothers and wives as they came from work. The expectations for women in the 1950s were that they weren’t going to work, intead they would be at home with other women like them. Most women participated in making objects that would help other women with their house work.

  35. Kaylat 2015 here. i took me about 3 mintues to read this article.
life in the suburbs were different from the city because there were more job opportunities and there wasnt much o f an crowd.
it was challenged when rosa parks didnt give up her seat to a white man and was arrested for it. it showed black people that their actions could make a difference.
a typical woman was a woman that stayed in the house all day. cleaned the house and wash dishes prepare cooked meals. she was mainly the care taker of evryone in the house. they did all the “motherly” work around the house.

  36. ae2015: It took me 4-5 minutes to read this article.

    SUBURBS VS. CITY:
The suburbs were more attractive because they were peaceful and very big compared to the small apartments of the city. Suburbs were also not far or didn’t keep people far away from getting a good job. They were very nice places to live in.

    BYE BYE BELIEFS:
In the 1950s these beliefs were being challenged by civil rights movements. Many participated which changed the community a lot. For example, Rosa Parks actions seem to cause a chain reaction because many looked up to her for her actions in the bus and so many were no longer afraid of fighting for their rights.
    WOMEN/GIRL POWER:
The expectation of women during this time was that they would be good moms and wivwes according to the article and that their place was at home or the kitchen. So, a typical American woman would most likely be protesting or boycotting against transportation in order to get intergration or equal power.

life was different in many ways.the great deprecion affected them because they wrent able to do lots of things.
it inproved because they had more liberty and more space to move around in.there was inprovement because they had the same jobs so they didnt have to waste any time looking for a new one.
they believed in things we know isnt true. for example they believed women belonged at home and do all the cleaning and have no education.we all know this isnt true because now girls go to school and not all at home, but some are :). they needed to stay home had everything done.when they had time with their kids they eould build bulltes.

  38. It’s shawn.W here and im going to write about Ameriac in the 1950’s.It took me about 15 minutes to read the article and understand it throughly. In the suburbs, it was less crowarded because lots of people were living in the city at the time. Some beliefs began to change by saying things like black people may acomplished certain things. Women were also responseible for certain things. They had to be good wives and also listen to what the men also said. After World War 2, the women were also expected to take care of the men after they came back from the war. Everybody had a part in the house execpt for the higher class families because they would have the good materials to use.

  39. Hi it’s Miladys and it took me 7 minutes to read the article.
life in the suburb were different than life in the city in meany ways. For example , there had a closer range of jod opprotunity and the suburbs were less crowed. You also got a yards and they were able to freely discusse.
Rasicm was a large prodlem in the 1950s for Aficans Amaricans, and because of this Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. lead thye Civle Rights Movement. Blacks were not seen as important as wights so Rosa had to give up her seat she would not and arrested for this idea that blacks had were not as important as a wight person.
In the 1950s women had certain expestaitons like being a good mother and wifealso they should be homemakers. So they role was as a housewife.

  40. crisitina2015-tonight it tokk me about 15 mins. life in the suburbs and the city was different because when people lived in the city there were too many people and there were 10 million homeowners that lived in the homes of the cities. racism was a big problem because the people treated black people very bad and they live in a poor socity. african americans lived in lower classes because the white treated them bad and they thought that it was unfair that white got alot of opportunities and they worked ,but black people didnt work or have alot of money. it began to be challenged because they didnt know where to live and there was also trouble when it got to the city and the suburbs. they excepted the woman to do many things and many chores. they also excepted them to be be very good mothers and wives. while they stayed home and cooked and did chores their husbands went out and did war. they also have to feed their family and make sure that they are in good health. the woman alos had to care for them and make sure nothing happen to them. “women were expected to be good mothers and wives” this showed that they had to be very good and stay home all day.

  41. Hey guys it’s DD2015! It took me about 15 min. to read the article. Life in the suburbs was different than in the city because in the city the apartment situation was lacking. It was seen to be an aprovement because there were over 10 million new homeowners.
Racism was a big problem to Afican Americans in the 1950s. Two people who helped the Civil Rights Movement was Rosa Parks and M.L.K. Rosa was an important part for equality.
In the 1950s women were expected to be good mothers and good wives. While they stayed home and cook their husbands went and did war.

  42. Wat is up This is a Argenis 2015. It took me about 5 minutes to finish the article. The suburbs and the city were difrent by in the Subuirbs the peoplehad more freedome. For example in the city Women werent ginving a good Education. Also because the Apartment Situation was lacking, so that is why people were forming Suburbs. It started to challenge them becauase people didnt respect them as a real person.and their were leaders that prevented that from happening for to long. Two Civil rights Leaders were Martin Luthert King anhd Rosa Parks. Rosa parks was im portant because she wanted equalaty and refused to give up her seat to a black man.Expectations for women were one, being a good wife and a good mother. While they were at home theuy were expected to cook and carre for everyone in the famil;y. They also did not have a good educatiopn.

  43. jm2015:it took me 8 minutes to read the passage.
    1. Life in the Suburs is different from life in the city because in the suburbs there are house an in the city there ar buildings. Also in the suburbs it is way smaller than the city.it was seen as an improvement because people were paying more money for places to live.
2.Martin lther king lead the civil right movemnets. Also he lead the civil right movement as well as rosa park with blacks being able to sit i the front of the bus.
    3. in the 1950s women had to be the hous ewife. They werent able to have the jobs men had therefor, men had to supprt their family. They were almost like the maid of the house. They had to cook and clean

  44. Keema T. I read for like 10 mins.Life in thew suburs was a full package of life. Families got a chance to get away from the crowds, had yards and a safe place for their kids to play. It was seen as in improvement b/c it was a better place of life for kids and family more oppertunites for jobs.Martin Luther king led the Civil rights movment and helped Blacks have better lifes.Rosa Parks also stood up with challenges for blacks rights. She helped the boycott on buses for blacks to have a right to sit to sit where they want to sit.Womens expectations in the 1950’s were to work ,work ,work. They were expected to stay at home and clean and not have an education. They were also expected to be good wievs and parents while their husbands were at war.Their jobs were to be a stay at home women and work

  45. Josh2015blog: Tonight it took me about 20 to complete the article.
    1. When there was no more room for housing in the city, people started moving to the edge of the cities which were called suburbs. The suburbs appealed to more citizens than the regular city. It was more of an improvement because people more money to live there.
    2. That belief was challenged because Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks were two key players in the Civil Rights Movement. They fought for many African Americans by the Montgomery bus boycott.
    3. Women mostly had to stay at home. It was a stereotype at that time for a typical American housewife to cook, clean, and take care of their children and husband.

    JRICH………………..OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today it took me about 15 minutes to read the article.

Life is the suburbs was harder because everything was so colse together and in the cities theres more spaces and more places where people can live at. Also because the suburbs where little towns.

Life began to turn challenging when the men went to war and the women had to stay behind and help. the women had to worry about the jobs, kids, and more. also they had to worry about the amount of money they didnt have and the amountg of houses there were.
the womens were excpected to take care of the kids, cook, and try to earn money . some of the activities were turning on the stove and making sure they cook for their family.

  48. tonight it took me approximately 25 minutes to finish reading the article. life in the suburbs is different than life in the city because in the city many people did not have homes to come home to when they finished the war. then they bagan making a place called the suburbs. in the subarbs contained nearly all types of families. they brought people from lowe- middle class and upper class. so the difference is that in the beginning the city was popular until they began to make the suburbs and they began to let all kinds of people and families enter. it was seen as an improvement because there was many different familyies joining together and there was families that had a roof over there head. that belief began to change little by little because rosa parks and martin luther king jr. had a role to play in this major change. thye reason is because they began to fight for equality and they began to prove to people that racism is not the answer and everyone should be treated equality. some expectations for women were to be good mothers and wifes and most of the time men did the work so there was no need for women to worry about anything. some activities women were in was that they were supposed to be homemakers. they had to make disicions for the family.

  49. temerald2015. tonight it took me to 15 minutes to read this articale. life in the suburbs was different from life in the city because in the subrubs you are allowed to own your own propery which includes a backyard, and they are also able to have more jobs available because less people live in the suburbs. in the 1920’s the blacks were thought of as less of a person and they had to be segergated from the whites because they werent wearthy enough to be treated equaly.back then the wemon had to stay at home an mind the kidds while the men would go out and make the money.the wives also ahad to clean and cook and wait on the men.they were allowed to make money. they had particapated in were to be homemakers and to try to teach the kidds with they little education the mothers had

  50. markos2015-i read 5 minutes to finish the article.
1.it was different becuase they werent use to seeing alot of people in the streets or houses they are use to seeing apartments and alot of people in the streets.it was an improvement becuase they had more space and a great idea to fill the space in the suburbs.
2.it was hard to live in the 1950s becuase african americans had to give up their seats on the bus, they couldnt eat at all white places, and they had all white places.
3.some of the expectations for women were to take the jobs that the men had before the war started.what the women did during this time was they had to be good wives and they had to come to htier houses after their work.

  51. Tonight,it took me approximately 15 minutes to complete the reading article.Life in the suburbs was different because there were different groups of people living there and they each had a home to themsleves and it didnt have as many issues as the city did,it was like a get away dream vacation. The belief becan to change because African Americans began to earn money and work hard like the white people to improve their status.Women had to work twice as much as men did because they were expected to be good workers and a great house wife when their husband came home. They were also expected to be a great mother to their when in need.Women took on the role of being the husband for the house.Women had to do all the work around the house.Wonce the men left there were more jobs available to the women so some of them had more than one job.

  52. My name is Adrian. It took me about 15 minutes to read this passage and take 5 notes. Life in the suburbs was differently from life in the city because life in the suburbs was less crowd and less noisey. It was seen as an improvement because it was an easy place to get jobs. Those beliefs began to be aa challenge during the 1950’s because for African American fathers they were knocked down from the job because the whites came from WWII. Therefore, they did not have any money to support thier family. Now women had to become housewives and workers in order to help support their family along with the fathers. For whites the had it the easy way because they were alot of racism. Whites automatically had jobs which were unfair. Expectations for women was to cook, clean the house and basically be a house wife.

  53. Tonight, it took me approximately 15 minutes minutes to finish reading the article. The way life in the suburbs was different from here in the city is that in the suburbs it is big and the city aint that big. Well, the city is okay it isnt big and it is not small. It has seen in improvement by it increasing the amount of people living in the suburbs. In the city, there are a lot of people and it is sometimes crowded. It says, ” living in the suburbs was attractive to many people for many reasons”,. This meant that it was not that good living in the suburbs. In the 1950’s whites had more opportunitys to do more stuff than blacks. They had more advantages to do more stuff than them. In my opinion, i think this isnt fair at all. For example, it says, ” racism was a significant part of the lives of african americans in the 1950’s”. This meant that racism was a big part of their lives and it was an issue to them. Some of the expectations for womens in the 1950’s, was that they were expected to be good wives and mothers. Also they were expected to ” rise up in the workplace”. Some of the activities they participated in was working in shops cleaning for their husbands in children etc. This article was interesting. It was interesting to learn about whites, blacks, and the issue of racism.

  54. Freddy p2015 it took me about 15 mintues to do my reading and my 5 notes. Life in the surb was different from life in the city because, a surburbs has more space for kids and farming, and lastly a city is more packed up and is more dangerous than a surb. This was being challeged in the 1950s because there were more jobs availbe after the war, and more schools were opening in america for whites and blacks. This was also being challenged because this is the time period of the civil rights movement. This is how the 1950s were after world war 2. Some things women had to do during the 1950s were that they had to stay home and be a housewive. This means that the Husbands did all the work and the wifes satyed home. This shows thatt women werent respected as much and were trained to be maids.THANK U

  55. Jalisa2015:Tonight, it took me approximately 15 minutes to finish reading the article.Life in the suburbs was different from the city because when you got out of the city the neighbors were totally different from the suburbs. They all want a different community. Also the social people that had an individual life style. This was seen as an improvement by people style of way living and people traveling together place for a better good for their family. The beliefs began to be challenge to them by loosing their jobs, not having their money also when black and white people had to be separate. Some expectation that women had to face during the 1950’s were that they had to do everything at home. Also women had to face by doing the civil rights movement they had to face many of the problems. Some of the actives women had to face during the 1950 and had to do things that Civil Rights Movements people needed to do.This were really hard for all the people that were trying to survive by this time.

  56. hi is kimberly again and today i read a story called American in th 1950s.It took me around 20 minutes to read this story . Before starting to talk about the book i have a question …why has their been 20 years of economic stagnations? Lets see people in america suddenly think that since the war is finished the veterns returned ,and that the Americans lifes will finially will be enjoable.Something that is really interesting is that when the war was finished over 2 million women lost their jobs and guess whats their next choice on the list .It would be back home in the kitchen while thir husband {the man of the house}took over the workforce again. the women had much more harder jobs then mens ,Forexample ,they were expected to be good mothers and also wives.Which ment the womens place was at home and they had to make almost everything perfect .Specking about this why in one time did a lady named Rosa Parks have to give up her sit that she had payed for ?i still wonder in why back in those days everything was sooo hard and so difficult and so harshhhh.well lets keep on findingout .BE BREZZY

  57. My name is Ashley2015. Tonight it took me approxeimently 10 minutes to finish the passage. Life ion the suburbs is different from the city, because they have cookouts, its more family oreintated, the wives all get to bond because they are all doing the same thing (being house wives). This was seen as an improvement, because even if you were poor and only had a little bit of money you would still be able to buy a house. This also was an improvement because it made more space for people to live in the city which helped the home crisis. The belief was challenged by Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. Rosa Parks had stayed in her seat and would not let a white man sit just because, he was white. Also, she was arrested because of this and this led to the boycott.
The Montgomery Boycott was lead by Martin Luther King. This almost overturned the thought that blacks were not equal to have the same rights as blacks ! The expectations for women were to be housekeppers and housewives. They were to take care of the kids, cook, clean, teach the kids, and also they were not aloud to work certain jobs.
