UNC Post – Tuesday May 4, 2010

A member of UNC proudly displaying her NF Winter Exhibition project from 6th grade :)

Hi KIPPsters!

It’s back to posting on the blog today. You guys did a great job posting the lines you loved over the weekend. I was extremely impressed with your citation analysis (analyzing quotes from stories). Very high level work and extremely critical thinking, good job! Today, return to the ideas you discussed with your partner in class: characters and their mistakes.

CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS:

1. Username. (If you are a Kayla, please include your last initial, just to help me keep track.) Title.

2. Today, I read _______ pages.

3. Note 1. (high quality, people!)

4. Note 2. (even higher quality, people!)

5. In what other books have you seen similar issues or problems? How did the characters handle those issues or problems in that book? In the same way? Differently? Be as specific as possible with details from both texts. (3-5 sentences please).

Happy blogging and happy reading!

Love,

Stabookski

  1. My user name is jasonb2015. I am reading “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. Tonight, I read 46 pages.
Note 1: (Character Empathy) I am empathetic towards Katniss because she feels that her identity has been taken away with all the pretending and acting as someone she isn’t (Collins 117).
Note 2: (Inference) Haymitch is just trying to help Katniss with the Hunger Games and the interview, but Katniss doesn’t understand this. She thinks that Haymitch is annoying and forcing her to change who she is (Collins 119).
Though “The Hunger Games” is science fiction and futuristic, the issues in “Before I Die” are similar. The main issue of course with the “Hunger Games” is facing death while Tessa is also going through the same situation, having leukemia and knowing that she’ll soon die. Both Katniss and Tessa are worried about facing their death and rather than coming out strong and facing their reality, they back down and bring out their weaknesses, which does not give them the potential to survive what they are going through. They both do learn how to adapt to their situation, though. Katniss is very determined and trains really hard to impress the Gamemakers in order to perform well in he Hunger Games. On the other hand, Tessa lives every day of her life as if she were to die tomorrow with complete freedom and strength.

  2. s.brownie 2015. Th1rteen R3asons Why.Tonight I read 50 pages.
note1: Hannah cut her hair to get noticed, while most people think that others intentionally cut their to gain attention and rid themselves of negative feelings. The guidance counselor gave their social group packets on suicidal people. And the first symptom of a suicidal person is a sudden change of appearance, like what she had done before.(page 168)
note2:Did the others guess that Hannah asked the question? Is that why they were so angry about it?
Hannah’s situation is similar to Bella’s in Breaking Dawn. They were so pushed away from normal life that they resulted in suicide.(BTW turning into a vampire is TOO suicide! *raspberry*)

  3. sammy2015: I am reading If You Come Softly by Jacqueline Woodson. I read 20 pages. Note 1- INF: Jeremiah seems very shocked and happy about the kiss with Ellie. They may be a different race and sometimes judged by others but they don’t seem to let others interfere or tuin how they feel about each other. Note 2- INF: Ellie had spoken to her older sister, Anne, about guys before. Now, Anne seems to not be very happy with Ellie’s choice in guys. She seems to disapprove just because Jeremiah is black. I’ve seen these issues in many teen books. I remember in the book Nobody’s Perfect byMarlee Matlin that a girl had an issue that she was deaf. She was different but that didn’t stop her from anyhting. It didn’t even prevent her from having a friend. The girl, Alexis, became friends with Megan. They found out that they actually had something in common. They both had hearing problems.

  4. lourdes2015: I am currently reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I read 63 pages.
Note1: Inf- The point of the Hunger Games was to watch the tributes from all of the districts kill each other. It seems to be amusing to watch other people die for their entertainment. This is a harsh punishment for the Dark Days. The districts only wanted freedom and independence from Panem.
Note2: Throughout the book, Katniss’s opinion on Peeta changes constantly. He showed kindness towards her and helped her trying to win her trust. This changes when Katniss hears what he is planning to do with the other careers to her. Now, she will be on her own.

    • The issues in The Hunger Games are similar to the the book, Gathering Blue. The character in that story, Kira, suffers from a lack of food and water like Katniss and her family does. They both deal with living in low class neighborhoods. Katniss is different because she doesn’t have a disability like Kira does. Also, Katniss Struggles to survive the games. Kira tries to survive the world of people without disabilities.

  5. Angeline2015: Today, I read 46 pages.
Note 1:Inference: I think the reason why Cinna chose the idea of having Peeta and Katniss go inside holding hands was because he knew that once they saw what they had to do they would o what they can to win and stay alive.(pg.80).
Note 2: critique: I disagree with Suzanne Collins. I don’t think girls should be allowed to fight. At least to make ot far they should put a girl vs. a girl and a guy vs. a guy and not a guy vs. a girl, specially knowing that they’re best friends. Peeta and Katniss both have to fight to death and this has caused a big separation between them.(pg.83).
In a book that I have seen a similar problem as this, has been The Giver. In The Giver, they didn’t do as much things as in this book. It’s kind of not the same because in The Giver they didn’t suffered as much as in the hunger games. Even though, they had a similarity because they both had to fight and made sure their family was safe.

  6. The title of my book is The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Today, I read 33 pages. My first note was a question. If the accident didnt happen in the airplane with Percy mom’s parents, would she let Percy go?The reason I asked this question was because that was the reason he didn’t go and I was curious. My second note was an inference. I can infer that Annabeth likes Percy because everytime she passes by or sees him, she is always blushing. I think its very cool that her hat makes her invisible. Percy and his friends have ten days to find and return Zeus, this reminds me of the book Coraline when she has to go to the shop and return numerous objects in 10 minutes. These characters are different because one is a boy and one is a girl. Also, Coraline is much more responsible when it comes to clutch sitations like this.

  7. kaylap2015.Today i read 43 pages.Note1: Did Tessa really wanna have sex with Adam or did he wanna force her? Note2: Tessa and Adam had sex…right after they have sex would they ever talk to each other the same way?. This book is similar to the book Forever because Katherine is a girl who was curious and she wanted to see how the first time feels and so did Tessa. Also because Tessa is an intense character just like Katherine

  8. Tonight i read 20 pages and i completed our goal. My first note is: Logan sould not care for his parents decision on doing whatever they want to buy or get because he is not them(123).My second note is: Can Cami ever be friends with Logan because Cami i believe they were never friends and i think they should get to know each other(136). I seen this in another book that it was alot of bullies who thought that they owned the streets for example: “The Outsiders.” The characters handled this by not being timid and standing for themselves. Also they handled this very differently because they have a group so they acted more confident. The group from the outsiders and Logan are very different because they have alot of friends to back them up but Logan doesnt have a lot.

  9. Josh2015 blog: Today I read for a pretty long time because I read from 125 to 170 for catching up with my reading partners. That is a total of 45 pages but it was pretty easy for my notes.
    1. Percy and the other campers frightened because two messages were sent to him. The first one which told him he was the son of Posiden. Because of that first message, the second message said that two monsters were on a relentlessness pursuit to find him and kill him.The camp immediately had to be evacuated(p.127).
    2. Percy’s and friends were talking to the oracle and it said that he had to find what was stolen. It also said he could bring one friend, one he could really trust. But Percy is still confused because he still doesn’t know what he has to find.
In the book Monster by Walter Dean Myers he had a lot of challenges. The fact of being in jail at the age of 16 is frightening. But, he dealt with it and became optimistic in the end.

    JRICH………………………OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. WHATS GUCCI: today i read a total of 40 pages, the title of my book is The lightning Thief. One note for tonight is, when percy is talking about greek gods are blame for things that go wrong, whom blames percy for his actions? page 168. another note is that, why is percy hiding from his uncle ferdinand, and is he like percy? page 181. one thing that in other book have happen like in this book is trust. why because in the book percy has trouble trusting some of the characters , and it like this in other book that i read too.

  11. Hello this is Argenis2015 and tonight I read 42 pages from Before I Die. Tonight I read on how Tessa is on number nine on her list wich is to have Adam sleep over in her house. her father doesnt want it to happen, but Tessa finally convinced him to let her.Infrence: Tessa is getting closer and closer to her death, their are multiple signs for examples that nher nose bleedinmg wouldnt stop. Inf: Tessa wants Adam to sleep with her, is number nine on her list. She wont listen to her father in saying no,and brings up things like we would move away to scotland if you dont let him. Tessa is facing many problems right now, one that is mainly having cancer.I have seen this in many Autobiographys about people having cancer.

  12. Julio2015: Today I read 30 pages in my book The Lightning Thief. My first note is an issue that Percy Jackson faced. he was with his freinds, and his friends wanted to go to Los Angeles. He nor his freinds didn’t have the tickets so they wanted to steal them. This shows that Percy Jackson is facing per-preasure. He wants to be with his friends, but knows its the wrong thing to do. What will Percy Jackson chose. My second note is related to my first note, but is a inference. I can infer that Percy Jackson is brave because he did alot just to get a ticket to go to L.A. Just the thought of stealing for me is a very bad thing to do. To me I would trust myself, and not my freinds. I have seen these issues in other books. Such as A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Francie faces per-preasure and doesn’t now what to do about it. It shows how Percy and Francie can relate to having a diffilcult life when you’re a teen.

  13. Today I read 45 pages of Before I Die by Jenny Downham.
Note 1: If Tessa and Adam are SO in seriously in love that means that they are old enough to get their own place and move in together if that’s what they really want for themselves.
Note 2: Maybe Adam is just flirting with Tessa. It doesn’t mean that Adam LOVES her and that he wants to move in with her or be with her forever.
I haven’t really seen this in any other book. A problem could be peer pressure which I see in 13 Reasons Why which is why Hannah killed herself because of her friends. Hannah killed herself while Tessa is sort of killing herself slowly by all the things she is doing. I guess at the end they just both end them killing THEMSELVES because no one told them to do that.

  14. JerickA.2015. Today i read a total of 71 pages. Note1: I predict that percy will use violence against his step father and for other preblems. Note2: I can connect to this because when im leaving a place i dont want to be in im happy beacuse it makes me feel like im having a lot of freedom. Yes, in other books ive seen these problems. Characters in the other books that i have read have use solution as violence, crime, arguing and drama. They also use other sulutions that may be even worster.

  15. today i read a total of 20 pages.
1 INF: i think Zyler is really shy.why? i think because she doesnt want to let anyone know if she likes him or not.when they ask her she gets really timid.
2 TTS: i can connect because when im asked if i like someone i get really red and words i don know how to explain :-X 🙂 . Just like Zyler feels.
i seen these issues in, the outsiders, they have bulliness going on there too. they treated their problems by killing and fighting and in my book they just talk bad about each other and some fighting.

  16. HELLO ORLANDO G 2015 AND YES I DO REALIZE IM WRITING IN CAPS ,BUT THAT IS MY STYLE ANY WAY TODAY I READ A TOTAL OF 22 PAGES IN MY BOOK THE HUNGER GAMES BY SUZANNE COLLINS.DURING MY 22PAGE READING I CAME UP WITH 2 NOTE THAT I WANT TO SHARE BECAUSE I HAVE TO.
I THINK PEETA HAS TO BE THE GUY MOST GIRLS WANT TO DATE BUT WONT BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY WILL END UP LOOSING BECAUSE, I THINK HE IS EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF A GENTLEMAN IS HE IS VERY DISRESPECTFUL AND HE DOESN’T CARE ABOUT WHAT OTHERS SAY.

DOES KATNISS HAVE A CRUSH ON PEETA?
IN OTHER BOOK IVE SEEN PROBLEMS LIKE PEOPLE STARTING PROBLEMS AND JUST LOOKING FOR DANGER LIKE BOB IN THE OUTSIDER. HE ENDED UP DEAD FOR TRYING TO PICK A FIGHT WITH JOHNNY AND PONY BOY. THE ISSUE WASN’T HANDLED PROPERLY BECAUSE JOHNNY ENDED UP STABBING BOB BECAUSE HE WAS CHOKING PONYBOY. IN THE HUNGER GAMES IT WAS HANDLED MUCH DIFFERENTLY KATNISS WASNT KILLED.

  17. JerickA.2015
Today i read a total of 71 pages.
Note1: I predict that Percy will start to use violence to solve his problem with his step father. Also he will use fighting to solve other issues.
Note 2: What does the word immortal mean in this case?
In my opinion. in other books that i have read many characters have handled problems with crime, fighting, drama, and even arguing. In my book Percy handles problems by fighting and using violence sort off.

  18. Hello this is Elianny2015. I read 34 pages today from Kendra. Note 1: How is Kendra feeling now that she is actually having sex? Note 2: If Kendra ends up pregnant how would her mom react to this and what would she tell her? One similar book is Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen. This character decided that she want this to let her down she was going to keep moving. It was different because Kendra just starting to act up when Halley didn’t she kept on moving. She just saw this as a way to keep on going with her life.

  19. Genesis2015.If You Come Softly.Today I read 20 pages.Note 1,inference:On page 114, Jeremiah is asked to meet new people along with his family and he refuses, instead he would much rather be in his room thinking about Ellie. This shows that Jeremiah is interested in Ellie and Ellie is interested in Jeremiah.Note 2,prediction,Page 116:I think that Jeremiah, when he dates someone he’ll still like someother girls. This is because he likes when girls flirt with him even if they are older than him.Connections to other books I’ve read about is when some kids mistreat their parents. These characters react by going to other places in their house, in this case Ellie goes to her room. For example, at the beggining Ellie gets mad at Marion and she goes to her room.

  20. So far what i have read today is about how they are getting ready for leaving the camp. it was describing the way that what they had to pack for getting ready for in the future in the story and they were trying to figure out where they needed to go in order to get the orbs that they need for getting to Olympus. i personally think that is a crazy way to get to Zeus anyway. I also figured out that Grover really cares for Percy, one because he is his watch and also because it says in the book that Grover got him something. The whole camp says that they gave him 100 dollar ” das allot of cash money”. But in mortal not immortal money “i wonder what immortal money looks like”. Well that’s a mystery.

  21. emanie2015. the lightning theif. rick riordan. today, i read a total of 30 pages. today, my note is going to be about an emotion… ( i made this one up)… I think that it is sad and somewhat a good thing that her mother does not let her take the airplane because the reason that Percys parents does not let her take the airplane is because she had a flashback about what happened to her parents. Her parents died while being on the airplane and she does not want him to go through the same problems. my sencond note is that Annabeth likes pearcy because it says in the book that eveytime she sees opearcy she always blushes and now when she sees grover she always blushes. I never really seen another book with the same issue. ( i will continue at home… bye =])

  22. Gianni2015.The Lightning Thief. Rick Riordan. Today I read 30 pages. I think that a reason Percy’s parents never took him on an airplane is because Percy’s mom lost her parents in a airplane crash. I just found out that Annabeth’s hat lets her be invisible. Another book that reminds me of this is Bone a comic book because the main character didnt’t really know him self. The character decide to run away from his family and became a hated person.

  23. temerald2015”thirteen reasons why “. today ia read 37 pages . (prediction) the second main character named clay just might have a mental break down because he now sees how much hannah really means to him and now he wishes that he could go back and change the way he treated her.(connection) i can connection the character ryan to some of the people in the book the outsiders because ryan steals in that could lead him in the wrong direction.i have seen those issues in many teen books before. each one handles their own problems in their ownway
