I hope you had a great Tuesday! Today, let’s focus on causal relationships, or in easier terms, CAUSE and EFFECT RELATIONSHIPS. What are some events that transpired BECAUSE of other events in your novel?
CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS
1. Username. Title. Author.
2. Tonight, I read ___ pages.
3. In 2-3 sentences, summarize what you read tonight.
4. Identify an event or problem that happened BECAUSE of a choice or an action of your protagonist’s. What happened? How did it happen? What was the cause and what was the effect?
5. Identify how the event could have been avoided or could have been even better if one cause had been changed.

2027 Reads! 
Anthony P Lord of the Clans, 30 pages. Thrall now seems to realize his strength against his trainers. as he starts getting older his sences become clearer and the “mask that used to shade his eyes” now has disapeered. We now know Thrall’s power.
EVENT: Thrall is training with his trainer and he is told to fight his trainer. Thrall grabs his WOODEN sword and begins swinging. Thrall hits his trainer in his helmet and knocks him toward the ground. Thrall says this in his mind “Must kill, trainer.” Thrall nearly broke the Trainers skull.
CAUSE: Thrall has been pushed by so much stress and beating that he couldn’t hold it an me more.
EFFECT: Thrall nearly kills his trainer and almost loses his hope of being freed.
suni2015- Tonight I read the book The Hunger Game, by Suzanne Collins. In tonights reading I read over 24 pages. This book is mostly about violence and betrayal. The main character Katniss struggles to help her family from experiencing a miserable life were they live through poverty and starvation. In the book Katniss goes through scenes were she experiences life and death, in a t.v show were twelve outlying district are govern by powerful people who remind them that they are weak by doing this game. One problem that happen was when Katniss sister was chosen as a tribute , because after that Katniss volunteer for her. I t happen when they were chosing the boy and the girl from each district to compete against the other district. The cause was that she was inform to go to the hunger game, the affeect is that she will be in great danger because she is faced with death. It would have been avoident if she wouldn’t volunteer for her sister. It would have been even better if she didn’t volunteer because then her sister will have the cause not her.
My user name is jasonb2015. I am currently reading “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding and tonight I read a total of 23 pages. In tonight’s reading, Simon has recovered and wakes up and as he returns back to the beach, he sees the dead pilot with his parachute hanging in the trees. He soon realizes that the beast the children had “seen” was really the pilot hanging down from the trees. After Simon’s discovery, he hurries up to tell the news to the group, but as he approaches the beach, all the boys believe that Simon is the beast and kill him. As darkness falls, none of the boys seem to regret the death of Simon and Ralph mysteriously begins to have nightmares. While he’s sleeping, Jack’s group brutally attack Ralph and steal Piggy’s glasses- the secret to making fire. Because Ralph could not control himself or the members of his group, they violently killed Simon, for they believed that he was the beast when he clearly wasn’t. They were so desperate of finding the beast that there evil side had taken over and turned them into savages with no control at all. With the strong leadership skills of Ralph, he could have prevented the death of Simon by strictly demanding the boys to not attack Simon and making them realize that they are not in the island to act like wild savages, but to survive and interact with each other for survival.
Sammy2015: I am reading Before I Die by Jenny Downham. I read 23 pages tonight. Tessa and Zoey had a small arguement like they usually do. They eventually make up. Tessa went frantic for a while while driving, but Zoey convinced her to pull over. Zoey is pregnant and Scott was cheating her the entire time. A problem Tessa has been through arguements with Zoey. Zoey usually backs down. Close by the beginning of novel, Tessa went to a club and Zoey tried to put her with guys. Tessa enjoyed the dance but then wanted to leave. Zoey convinced her to stay. One of the guys was Scott, the guy that got Zoey pregnant. This could have been different. Tessa could have been calmer and don’t pressure herself to have sex. Though she is dying, her sex life shouldn’t have been rushed. Though Tessa got what she wanted, she again left the guy and backed down. Tessa seems to try to act commuted to something but later, she doesn’t do it.

HEYY again!!Today i have read 20 pages of it’s not the end of the world. Karen has decided not to get married. She has made the choice because of the failure of her parents. Today was not the best day ever. Her parents fight all the time and she is getting tired of it. She has a brother and a sister and a cat named Mew. She has a diary that she grades each of the days. It can go from A- to an F. Today was the day that was a C-.because…
CAUSE: Dad came home late because of traffic, while his family was having dinner.
EFFECT: Karen mom makes a big fit about it, and throws things and Karen’s dad’s feet. She makes everybody’s dinner and the rest of the day worse than it was.
I think that to avoid this issue Karen’s mom should have never made a HUGE deal about it because it wasn’t like he was cheating on her he was coming home, but there was traffic. That made dad angry, which made him leave. This made the 6 year old daughter cry because her dad had been leaving again. And her mom had been locked in her room.

Angeline2015: The title of my book is Vampire Academy by: Richelle Mead. Tonight, I read the last 25 pages. I read that Dimitri got jealous of Lissa because shes in love with the boy she likes. Victor, however talks Dimitri into not killing Lissa and actually ends up doing a good job.
Cause: Dimitri found out that Lissa is in love with the boy she likes.
Effect: Dimitri tries to kill Lissa.
It could of been better if write in the scene where Dimitri was about to kill Lissa Victor could step in, instead of him telling her not to before. I think this would of made that scene more spicier.
RV2015: I read The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. I read 15 pages. I read that though Lina, Doon and Poppy haven’t found the mystery they will. Poppy may be young but is helpful by finding pieces of maps with clues on them. The city was built underground and Lina need to figure that out but is trying but doesn’t stay at that job that benefits what she wants to find. Lina still wants to be a messenger when being a pipe-worker can get her closer to the secret. With the help of Doon working there now he can help with finding the secrets. Lina wants to be a messenger because she likes the job, but being a pipe-worker will get her to an adventure. Will Lina make it? Only if she believes and becomes more opened minded. I know she will.

OgunleyeO2015- Today I started and finished reading “The Starving Time”, by Patricia Hermes. Tonight I read 102 pages in 39 minutes. So, today I finished reading book The Starving Time also it was a story/diary that dated back to the early 17th century (1609-1610 to be exact). This story/diary told of Jamestown from a girl’s perspective, which was rather interesting… Well, one cause and effect relationship would be… Not be friends with the Indians = they will not help you… The Americans in this story were aggressive to the Native Americans so, the N.A didn’t help them(they only do at one point). If the Americans could have been nicer and not have been so mean, they would have been helping themselves and the N.A.

lourdes2015- I am currently reading The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. Tonight I read 25 pages. Today, I read about how her school makes Lindsey feel worse about the death. This year, the challenge for the school was to play the game “How to Commit the Perfect Murder” forgetting that a student was murdered. When Lindsey finds out, she tries not to show how depressed she is, but it is obvious. Susie then watches her father. He is suspicious of their neighbor, Mr. Harvey. He thinks he is responsible for the murder of Susie (which he is right).
CAUSE: Susie doesn’t forget about earth and hopes to be back. She doesn’t let go of the past.
EFFECT: She is unable to move on and go on to a happier heaven. She remains stuck in her heaven, miserable about leaving her family and friends.
Susie could go on to the better heaven to see her dead family members if she starts to not care about what happened. She is still upset about her death and won’t move on from it. Susie could try giving up the hope of going back to earth because it is too late.
janibell2015- My book is The Clique by Lisi Harrison. I read 35 pages today. Today i read about how Claire is having a difficult time judging her friends at the competition. She doesnt want to hurt their feeling even though they arent as close as before but she is going to have to tell them the truth. Because Claire decided to say “ew” to the dress that her friend had, she was forced to wear it by her friends to prove that she really does like it . The event could have been avoided if Claire hadnt tried to be like her Westchester friends who judge people by what they wear. This shows that she should stick to one group of friends. Being with both groups makes her think differently and not the same way that her true friends love. I think Claire has to choose between two groups of friends who she both loves.
hi. Diamond2015. I am currently still reading Make Lemonade by Virginia Euwer Wolff. Tonight I read 20 pages. It was about how Jolly now dispises LaVaughn’s mother and doesn’t want to talk about her at all after what she said. Bad enough Jolly still is jobless and can’t take care of herself norher two kids very well. One conflict that occured was that Jolly keeps asking LaVaughn for money to do wrong things with. It all happened becuase Jolly is a lonely 17 yr old with two kids and she can’t really handle them.
CAUSE: Jolly doesn’t do the right thing and asks for money.
EFFECT: She can’t get the right education, can’t take care of herself or her kids and mostly relies on LaVaughn. This could have been avoided if Jolly just listened to LaVaughn’s mom and went back to school. The effect would turn into a positive one and her life would be better.
ClarissaC2015 – Tonight I read 15 pages of WTF by Peter Lerangis. We are back on Byron’s perspective. He has to get the money for Waits so that Waits can give it to his boss . Reina and the rest of the crew decide to work as a team to cover up Cam’s mistake. They only have a couple of hours to get the money so this is kind of hard for them .
If Cam hadn’t convinced Jimmy to drive then Jimmy wouldn’t have crashed the car. Then Jimmy, Waits, MC, Byron and Reina wouldnt have to go through this crazy night.

I read that Will met a new person named Hawkin and he talks like a gangster saying “son”. Also that Marriman said, ” For with you the circle is complete.” Also that Will found out that he is an Old One because Marriman said that they are born into the circle after Will reads the book. A problem that happen is that when CAUSE:Will read the book that Marriman said not to read because he was going to tell him why he has these kind of power EFFECT:but he read the book and found out hat the Old Ones are born to the to the circle. What could of been avoided is that he should of never read the book because he would of never found out about that way.

Hey guys! DD21015- Tonight I read the one piece ” The Black Cat Pirates.” by Eiichiro Oda. 72 pgs. Tonight I read that Captain Kuro has brought his pirate crew to the town. The pirates came to steal the treasure from the small village. Usopp tried to warn the villagers, but they wouldn’t listen. Because they didn’t believe Usopp about the pirates, the all seemed surprised when the pirates came and attacked. Next time they should listen to Usopp!
I am reading The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan. I read 30 pages tonight. Percy is really pushed over the edge when Leneus says that Grover is worthless. So Leneus tries to talk himself out of being a part of the war. So Percy decides to tell him what will happen. A problem that Percy has is that Kronos is alive. If he had not left the Princess Andromeda Luke would have not been able to resurrect Kronos. If Percy had stayed and fight Kronos would be in Tarturus.
Hii am reading The Last Book In the Universe (not literally that’s just the name of the book :)). Tonight i read 21pages. in tonight’s reading, Spaz and Ryter are friends. at the beginning of yhe book they were enemies because Spaz was trying to rob Ryter, an old gummy who is still around since befor the big shake.
CAUSE: Spaz is allergic to mind-probing
EFFECT: Spaz is able to see the ill effects it has on the mind.
PREVENTION: Spaz wouldve never been allergic if it had existed. him being allegic therefore immune to mind probing is not an ill affect, but an effect that may help him and Ryter change the world.
emanie2105. riding feedom. Pam Muñoz Ryan. i read 25 pages last night. I read about how this girl is in an orphanage for boys and she really did not think anything of it. But after a while she realized that she is very different from the other kids around her. The problem is being different from the other kids. The reason is because she has become an expert horse rider and the other kids did not get as much freedom as she did. She was very determined to live the life she wanted to and she did. The cause is that she wants to be different and the effect is that she was treated differently because her actions told it all. Life could have been different if she would have jusst never tried to be different and just fit in but she wanted to be a leader and not a follower……Even though i DONT LIKE this genre I AM ENJOYING THE BOOK… 😉 Its not boring d-____-b
Hi this is Elianny agian. Tiday i read 30 pages of Polly’s Diary.Today i read about Polly is facig a ton of high school problems. She is haveing boy problems and bulling problems. I can really realate to ths book because most problems she is faceing i am or had pass through. He rcrush is this super popular kid who only goes out with cheerleaders. One problem she faced is that she asked John if he needed tutering in math and Brenda flipped out. John is her crush and Brenda is his girlfriend who is extermly over protective.Brenda was very mad and told her to meet her in the front yard tommorow morning(of course nothing good was heading her way). One way this could have been avioded if by Brenda just letting things slide i mean come on it is just turter. This is somthing i can realate to in alot of ways because something as simple as talking to a boy has gotten me in alot of trouble with jelopuse girls.
this book seems very intresting the way you describe it.. i seem lyke many people will lyke it and on ascale from 1-10 how much do yu lyke the book??

Arsh2015: Today I started reading Dairy Queen by Catherine Gilbert Murdock. I have read 34 pages today. In tonight’s reading, the narrator tells the reader a story. The story of when her father broke his hip because he laughed so hard. The whole family laughed at him because he broke his hip. The cause was that Dad laughed really hard when he heard the word “manure spreader”. The affect was he broke his hip, and the whole family laughed at him. The word wasn’t even funny, but Dad didn’t know how important it was, so he laughed at it. It could have been avoided by the protagonist know that her father was not going that word.

ORLANDO G 2015 HELLO. TONIGHT I DECIDED TO RE READ THE MESSENGER FROM PAGE 1. THIS BOOK IS MARKUS ZUSAK I READ FORM PAGE 1 TO 18.TONIGHT I READ ABOUT HOW THE BANK WAS ROBBED AND THE THIEF WAS TALKING ABOUT MARV’S CAR .THAT GOT HIM REALLY ANGRY AT THE THEIF BUT HE WAS LATER ON SHOT AT BECAUSE OF THE MISTAKE OF STAYING IN THE BANK FOR TOO LONG.
CAUSE:the thief stayed in the bank for too long arguing with Marv and Ed then he sees the cops and thinks they are looking for him but hey are not.
EFFECT:after he tried running out of the bank he was shot by the ops ,but if he had gone out earlier he would not have been shot at.
AVOIDANCE:This problem could have been avoided if the thief would not have gotten distracted by Ed and Marv he would have good and alive and it would have been better if had not robbed the bank

My name is Ashley Solomon. Tonight I am not reading my independent reading book, I am reading a book called The Secret Life of Bees. I am reading the book to my little sister day by day. Tonight I have read 35 pages in my book. Tonight I have read that the main character, who is coccasion is left w| her father after her mother leaves them and dies. She becomes something like her fathers maid in a way. The family struggles because of the lack of a womanly figure being their for her daughter. A cause and effect relationship is that the mother in the family had died and the effect, is that the family is left to face the fact that the effect is they are left without her and they are going to need to do things without the mother.
ae2015: DEMON THIEF by Darren Shan. Tonight I started the book Demon Thief and have read 27 pages. Tonight I read about my main character and narrator who has a special talent. This talent is that he sees lights everywhere. A big cause and affect situation in my story is how this special talent has affected the Kernel’s (protaganiast) life. Because Kernel sees theses light many people tiese him by calling a wierdo and telling others not to hang out with him. No one belives in Kernel, but he is positive that he is seeing somethimg no one else sees. The best way for Kernel to resolve this problem is by no longer mentioning his odd situation. If he wants someone to share it with, he should share it with only people who won’t tease him about it. Hopefully this will help him!

Tonight I read 20 pages of The Sea Of Monsters. Tonight i read that the 3 friends are at Monster Doughnut in the middle of nowhere. Then from the sky a Hydra appeared. So Percy started to fight them. Right when he is about to get burned Clarisse comes and saves him. A major conflict in the book is that CHB is being destroyed and Percy has to find the Golden Fleece.
